The regiment had its origin in Ångermanlands, Medelpads och Jämtlands regemente raised in 1646 in the newly conquered province Jämtland, although the men were mostly recruited in the old Swedish provinces of Ångermanland and Medelpad. The regiment was also called Thomas Gärffelts regemente after its
