Shinsengumi | 新選組

The Shinsengumi were a police force mainly comprised of swordsmen of the lower-samurai class, commissioned by the Kyōto Shugoshoku, Matsudaira Katamori. They had won fame after the Ikedaya incident, in which members of a sonnō-jōi cell were slain during a tumultuous time in Kyōto.
