Aizu Domain, ruled by the Aizu-Matsudaira family, was a loyal fudai domain of the Tokugawa shogunate. During this period it focused on internal order, Confucian education, and maintaining a strong traditional samurai military. Aizu’s troops trained regularly with spears and matchlocks and were value
